Why Does My Sprinkler Head Spray the Sidewalk?

A sprinkler head usually sprays the sidewalk because its arc or alignment is wrong, the head has shifted, the nozzle does not match the area, or the landscape has changed since the system was installed. Persistent overspray wastes water and is better corrected at the source than by simply reducing runtime.

Arc adjustment may be wrong

Rotors and adjustable spray nozzles are intended to water a defined area. If the arc extends beyond the lawn, water can repeatedly hit pavement.

The sprinkler body may be crooked

Soil movement, mower impact and traffic can tilt a sprinkler. Even a correctly adjusted nozzle can then throw water outside its intended pattern.

The wrong nozzle may be installed

A nozzle with too much radius or an unsuitable pattern can overshoot a narrow strip of turf. Nozzle selection should match the geometry and available pressure.

Landscape edges change

Driveway widening, new walkways, edging and bed changes can leave an old sprinkler pattern aimed at surfaces that were once landscape.

Why turning the radius down is not always enough

Excessive radius reduction can distort distribution and create dry areas. Coverage depends on the relationship among neighboring heads, not only whether one head stays off the pavement.

Check head height and position

A sunken or leaning head can create unexpected spray. See what causes sprinkler heads to sink.

Fort Mill Irrigation provides sprinkler head and nozzle repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is some sidewalk overspray unavoidable?

Wind can cause occasional drift, but repeated direct watering of hard surfaces usually indicates an adjustment, nozzle or layout issue.

Can I cap the head?

Removing one sprinkler changes coverage and zone hydraulics. The effect on neighboring areas should be considered first.

Why did overspray start suddenly?

A shifted head, damaged nozzle or recent landscape work can change the pattern quickly.
