Why Are Some Landscape Lights Dimmer Than Others?

Uneven brightness in a low-voltage landscape-lighting system can result from voltage drop, long cable runs, connection resistance, wiring layout, fixture differences or a developing fault. Where the dim lights occur along the run helps narrow the cause.

Distance and voltage drop

Low-voltage systems naturally lose some voltage over distance. Cable size, total load and wiring layout influence how much reaches fixtures farther from the transformer.

Connections can add resistance

Loose, corroded or deteriorated outdoor connections can reduce the voltage available downstream and may create uneven performance.

Do not assume every dim fixture is bad

If several fixtures in the same portion of a run are dim, replacing individual lights may not correct the underlying wiring or supply issue.
