Rachio Controller Troubleshooting: Common Sprinkler Problems
A Rachio controller can appear to malfunction because of Wi-Fi or app connectivity, schedule settings, Weather Intelligence features, field wiring, a failed solenoid, or a valve problem. The key is separating a controller/app issue from a problem in the irrigation system itself.
Rachio is online but a zone will not run
If other zones operate normally, the issue may be the individual station circuit, field wire, solenoid or valve rather than the controller’s internet connection. A controller can report that a zone is active without proving the valve actually opened.
See why one sprinkler zone won’t turn on for the full diagnostic path.
Rachio shows offline
An offline controller may have lost Wi-Fi connectivity even though the irrigation hardware still has power. Router changes, network credentials, signal strength and power interruptions can all affect connectivity. Avoid repeatedly factory-resetting the controller before documenting the existing schedules and settings.
Why Rachio may skip watering
Weather-based features can adjust or skip scheduled irrigation based on configured rules and weather data. A rain skip, wind skip, freeze skip, saturation skip or seasonal adjustment can make a healthy system appear to have missed a schedule.
Why Rachio may water when you did not expect it
Check all active schedules, flex or fixed scheduling, cycle-and-soak behavior and manual runs. If the system stops normally and starts again later, scheduling is more likely than a valve stuck open.

Rachio says a zone is running but no water comes out
The app reflects the controller command. A broken zone wire, failed common connection, bad solenoid, closed irrigation supply or mechanical valve problem can still prevent watering.
What to note before service
- Whether the controller is online or offline.
- Which zones work and which do not.
- Any app or controller fault message.
- Whether a manual run from the app behaves differently.
- Whether the issue followed network, electrical or landscape work.
When professional diagnosis makes sense
If the controller is powered and configured correctly but field operation is inconsistent, electrical and valve testing can identify whether the fault is in the controller output or irrigation system. Fort Mill Irrigation provides smart irrigation controller service and wire tracing.
Frequently asked questions
Does an offline Rachio mean the sprinklers cannot run?
Not necessarily. Connectivity and irrigation hardware operation are related but distinct. Exact behavior depends on the controller and stored schedules.
Why does Rachio skip a day when it did not rain at my house?
Weather-based decisions can use data that does not exactly match a localized shower or dry spot at one property. Review the reason shown for the skip and the weather source/settings.
Should I replace Rachio if one zone is dead?
No. One dead zone often points toward its station circuit, wire, solenoid or valve. Diagnose the zone before replacing a functioning controller.
