Why Does Water Drain From the Lowest Sprinkler Head?
Water often drains from the lowest sprinkler head because gravity moves water left in the lateral piping downhill after the zone valve closes. This is called low-head drainage. It is different from a valve that continues feeding pressurized water into the zone.
What happens after a sprinkler zone shuts off
The valve stops supplying water, but the downstream piping may still contain water. On a sloped property, that residual water can flow toward the lowest outlet and escape through the sprinkler until the line has drained enough to stop.
How long should low-head drainage last?
There is no single time because zone size, elevation change, pipe layout and head type vary. The important characteristic is that normal drainage should diminish and stop rather than continue indefinitely.
When it may be a leaking valve instead
If the lowest head repeatedly puddles long after irrigation ends, never seems to stop, or flows with noticeable pressure, the zone valve may be passing water while closed. That can result from debris, diaphragm damage or internal wear.
Compare the symptoms with sprinkler heads leaking while the system is off.
Can a check valve help?
Some sprinkler heads or compatible replacement components include check-valve features designed to reduce drainage from low points. Whether that is appropriate depends on the installed equipment, elevation and system design.
Why this matters on sloped Fort Mill properties
Elevation changes can make residual drainage more noticeable. Repeated puddling can erode soil around a head, create muddy areas and make homeowners assume the irrigation valve is failing when the real issue is gravity drainage.
What to observe
- Does the flow gradually slow?
- Is the leaking sprinkler clearly downhill from the others?
- Does it happen only immediately after that zone runs?
- Does water return hours later without another watering cycle?
When to call for diagnosis
If water does not taper off or you suspect the valve is passing water, Fort Mill Irrigation provides sprinkler valve repair and head and nozzle repair.
Frequently asked questions
Is low-head drainage a leak?
Not necessarily. It can simply be residual water leaving the zone after the valve has closed.
Why doesn’t every sprinkler drain?
Gravity directs water to the lowest available outlet, so higher heads can remain dry while the lowest one releases the residual water.
Can a bad valve look exactly like low-head drainage?
At first, yes. Duration and whether the water remains pressurized help distinguish them.
