What Happens if You Don’t Winterize a Sprinkler System?
If you do not winterize a sprinkler system, water left in vulnerable piping and components can freeze, expand and crack fittings, valves, backflow components or other irrigation parts. Not every un-winterized system will fail during every winter, but the damage from one cold event may not become visible until spring startup.
Why freezing water damages irrigation components
Water expands as it freezes. In a confined component, that expansion creates stress on rigid plastic, metal fittings, valve bodies and seals.
What parts are vulnerable?
Exposure varies by system, but above-ground backflow/supply assemblies, shallow components and places where water remains trapped deserve particular attention.
Why damage can stay hidden all winter
If the irrigation water is off, a cracked component may not leak. Once a spring sprinkler start-up repressurizes the system, water can escape from the damaged area.
Common spring symptoms after freeze damage
- Backflow or supply leaks.
- A valve box suddenly filling with water.
- One zone losing pressure.
- Water bubbling through the lawn.
- Broken fittings, risers or valve bodies.
Does Fort Mill really get cold enough?
Yes, freeze events occur in the Carolinas. The risk is not the same as in the Northeast, but vulnerable water-filled irrigation components are not immune. See can sprinkler pipes freeze in South Carolina?
What winterization does
Winterization reduces trapped water in vulnerable parts of the system and prepares supply/backflow components according to the system design. A blowout may be part of the process where appropriate.

Frequently asked questions
Will my system definitely break if I skip winterization?
No one can guarantee damage from a particular winter, but leaving vulnerable trapped water increases freeze risk.
Can I wait until after the first freeze?
Planning beforehand is safer because damage can occur during the cold event and professional schedules become crowded around sudden forecasts.
Does shutting off the water winterize the system?
Not necessarily. Water can remain trapped downstream of the shutoff.
