Why Is Water Bubbling Around a Sprinkler Head?

Water bubbling around a sprinkler head usually means water is escaping below grade from a damaged head body, riser, swing joint, fitting or nearby lateral pipe. The escaping water saturates the soil and then surfaces around the easiest opening—often the sprinkler itself.

A broken connection below the head

The sprinkler may look intact above ground while a threaded riser or flexible connection beneath it is cracked. When the zone runs, water escapes underground and bubbles around the head.

A cracked sprinkler body

Physical impact, age or freeze damage can crack the lower body. The head may still spray while also losing water into the surrounding soil.

The actual leak may be nearby

Water can travel through loose trench soil, so bubbling at a head does not guarantee the break is directly beneath that exact point.

Why other heads may become weak
